This production pays tribute to the great American lyricist and composer Stephen Sondheim, whose music so poignantly and profoundly brought to life the characters for whom he wrote.  In our production, the audience enters a typical café, observing people coming and going, each with their own story to tell.

Everyone can relate to a coffee shop or café where folks come and go, each of them with a story to tell.  One may well wonder what these folks are thinking, or what might be unfolding at that moment in their lives.  In this theatrical tribute to Stephen Sondheim, we reimagine and repurpose 21 songs from a wide array of his shows to give voice to those folks entering the Sondheim Cafe. 

In an interview just prior to his death, Stephen Sondheim commented that the greatest compliment he could receive was to have his music reimagined in a new way.  That is what we have done with our tribute…we have given a new context for his songs, and in so doing we see just how easily his songs transcend even the parameters of their original shows. His songs have a universality of spirit, a song writer’s dream and a trait that will surely enable his music to stand the test of time.
